DPF stands for Diesel Particulate Filter. This is a honeycomb construction made up of ceramic materials and is used to capture and store exhaust soot for emissions purposes.
DEF stands for Diesel Exhaust Fluid and is made up of urea and deionized water, it's contained in a separate reservoir from the fuel tank and is injected into the exhaust stream for emissions purposes.
EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. This system is used to recycle some of the exhaust stream back into the combustion chamber to reduce NOx by lowering the oxygen concentration in the combustion chamber.
These systems all hurt performance for the tradeoff of emissions. The DPF creates a restriction in the exhaust system which causes the engine and turbocharger to work harder.
The DEF system requires constant top up.
The EGR system recycles the exhaust fumes back into the combustion chamber limiting the amount of oxygen and causes power losses. These systems can also fail and allow engine coolant to mix with exhaust causing coolant to enter the combustion chamber which can lead to engine failure.
These systems all have their own flaws and are very costly to repair. Removing these systems allows the engine to perform better, increases fuel mileage, and can increase engine reliability.
These emissions systems should not be removed for street-use vehicles, check with local regulations for the legality of removing these systems.
The main downside to removing these systems is legality, you will need to check with local regulations for the legality of removing these emissions systems, generally, it is reserved for off-road and race use.
Removing the DPF system will increase the exhaust noise level and foul smell of diesel exhaust such as the pre-DPF systems used in older diesel vehicles.
The required items to remove or disable these emissions systems are a delete-capable race tuner. Currently, all the tuners listed on our website are delete-capable.
The DPF system will need to be physically removed from the exhaust system using a DPF-delete/Race pipe.
The DEF system gets disconnected with the installation of a DPF-delete/Race pipe, the tank itself can be left installed or removed.
Removal of the EGR system is optional, all our Race Tuners will disable the DPF/DEF/EGR systems but the EGR system can be left installed, fully removed, or the valve can be blocked off. You can find our EGR delete kits here.
